West Orange, NJ
Prism Capital Partners in 2018 completed Phase I of Edison Village, the industrial-to-residential redevelopment of the historic Thomas Edison Invention Factory and Commerce Center in West Orange. Representing the largest non-waterfront adaptive-reuse project in New Jersey, Edison Village encompasses 21 acres on Main Street, in the heart of West Orange Township’s Downtown Redevelopment Area.
The first phase of the project centered on the adaptive reuse of the Historic Thomas Edison Battery Building and surrounding grounds, which today house contains 334 residential units, 18,400 square feet of retail and a 630-space parking structure.
The 300 studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom, market-rate apartments comprising The Residences at Edison Lofts range from 590 to 1,500 square feet, with 20 penthouse units. The design, by Minno & Wasko Architects and Planners, takes advantage of the Battery Building’s existing architectural features to incorporate ceiling heights ranging from 14 to 16 feet, and eight- and 10-foot replica replacement windows. Residents have access to a private fitness center, indoor swimming pool, sauna, personal and bike storage, theater and media/screening rooms, private dining room, a dog-washing station, concierge service and a self-serve café. The property’s 12,000-square-foot rooftop indoor/outdoor Sky Lounge boasts 360-degree unobstructed views of the Manhattan skyline and offers a mix of seating with a firepit and barbeque grills. Edison Village also features complimentary shuttle service to two local train stations.
Edison Village’s retail component, including 34 second-story residences branded The Mews at Edison Lofts, occupies the corner of Charles Street and along Main Street. The Shoppes at Edison Village will provide current and future residents with a new in-town shopping experience featuring restaurants and café-style concepts. An interior plaza with a fountain is open to the public during the day.
The project’s Phase II will incorporate 230 for-sale townhouses.
Built in 1913 by Thomas Edison, the Edison Invention Complex on the site of Edison Village for decades served as a manufacturing operation. The site is bounded to the west by the historic Llewellyn Park, one of New Jersey’s premier gated communities. The newly refurbished Edison National Historic Site and museum also is located adjacent to the property.
