Prism’s Edison Village Redevelopment of Historic Thomas Edison Invention Campus in West Orange, N.J., Introduces 334 New Apartments

WEST ORANGE, N.J., – During her recent apartment search in Essex County, Jovita Gale was quickly drawn to the spacious homes and modern, amenity-filled living at The Mews at Edison Lofts in Edison Village, Prism Capital Partners redevelopment of the historic Thomas Edison Invention Factory and Commerce Center in West Orange. Today, Gale and her two children, ages 8 and 10, are now happily calling Edison Village home. The Mews is a boutique collection of the 34 one- and two-bedroom new construction residences situated above ground-floor retail space.

“I was looking for apartments with a more modern look and just fell in love with the lofty feel of our new place at The Mews,” said Gale, who grew up in East Orange. Gale, who has lived in South Jersey for the last 12 years, moved back to the area to be closer to family.

A clinical research professional, Gale chose a two-bedroom residence of approximately 1,300 square feet. “I work from home, so it was particularly important for us to have a spacious layout,” she noted.

Edison Village represents the largest non-waterfront adaptive-reuse project in New Jersey, encompassing 21 acres on Main Street in the heart of West Orange Township’s Downtown Redevelopment Area. Phase I, which includes The Mews, also involves the complete renovation and reimagining of the 100-year-old factory, introducing 300 studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom rental homes known as The Residences at Edison Lofts. Homes at The Mews and The Residences at Edison Lofts boast designer kitchens with stainless steel appliances and luxury bathrooms. Model homes are now open for both, and Phase I also includes the development of 18,400 square feet of retail and a 630-space parking structure.

Gale and her fellow residents at Edison Village will have access to a vast range of amenities, including a private fitness center with sauna, indoor swimming pool, personal and bike storage, a media/screening room, business center, private dining room, storage components and concierge service. “My kids are really excited to swim in the indoor pool this fall,” added Gale. “I am particularly looking forward to having a fitness center right next to my home instead of driving 15 minutes to get to my current gym.”

Edison Village also features a rooftop indoor/outdoor lounge with sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline, park-like green spaces and landscaped grounds, covered parking and even a dog-washing station. Shuttle service will be available to and from the Orange Train Station for commuting to Manhattan. Ideally situated in downtown West Orange, Edison Village is near Bloomfield and Montclair.

“Edison Village is a special project in that it celebrates a treasured piece of our state’s history while ushering in a new brand of urban living here in West Orange,” said Prism’s Edwin Cohen, principal partner. “We are thrilled to welcome Jovita and all of our new residents as they begin to experience the unique environment of Edison Village.”

The Edison Village retail component, on the corner of Charles Street and along Main Street, will provide residents and the public with a new in-town shopping and dining experience, The Shoppes at Edison Village. The Shoppes will feature restaurants and café-style concepts, and include an interior plaza with a cascading fountain open to the public during the day.
